Have you been protecting the wrong side of your Cd's?
Most people protect the play side of their discs (the bottom) and don't think about the label side. That's a mistake. The protective layer of plastic is actually thinner on the label side than on the bottom. Immediately below that thin protective layer on top is the precious dye layer where your data resides. Scratch the top, and you've got a serious problem.
